Ciao USWIB! I hope you all are having a wonderful semester so far. My name is Rebecca Samet and I am a Sophomore in Gallatin. My ever-evolving concentration right now is titled “Fashion Business and Consumer Identity.” I am really interested in the fashion industry and I aim to understand more of the technical (business/financial) side of fashion and how that also relates to consumer identity. So, I am studying the history of fashion, art history, gender studies, and taking Stern courses that revolve around my professional interests as well. NYU Florence has proven to be the best study abroad side in terms of my concentration and my academic interests.
The second idea that really, really shocked me is how I actually feel about being in Florence. I decided to go to NYU because of their study abroad program. I am from Long Island, New York and I felt a little upset at first that I wasn’t going so far away for college how I originally wanted to. NYU is amazing school and it turns out that I happen to live just less than an hour from it. I decided to study abroad this semester because I wanted to know what it was like to be completely removed from all that I ever known. Honestly, I still feel exactly the same. Being in Florence has become so normal to me that it doesn’t completely feel foreign at all to me. I am so used to life here now and I really enjoy that feeling. I miss home a little bit more know, but I realized that for the past year and a half I was completely wrong about my relationship to home. When I come back to New York I definitely want to make more of an effort to visit my family more often, as I never used to during my first year and a half in college. I definitely feel a lot more mature after coming to this realization. When I eventually have to leave Florence (which I never want to because this place is incredible) I have the feeling that I will enjoy my last two years at NYU a lot more versus if I never studied abroad.
