Buen Provecho, Madrid!

A Guide to the City's Best Cheap Eats

When I first got to Madrid, I realized two things:

  1. The food here is incredible, and

  2. Eating out all the time can add up fast

But here’s the good news:

Madrid makes it surprisingly easy to eat well without spending a ton. Between casual neighborhood spots, grab-and-go gems, and places with portions that last you two meals, I’ve found some go-to favorites that never disappoint (and never go over €10!)

Here are some of my cheap meals in Madrid:

Honest Greens

Honest Greens is Europe’s version of Sweetgreen, but SO. MUCH. BETTER. Everything feels super fresh, clean, and customizable, and it’s one of the places I go when I want something that isn’t heavy.

They also have amazing breakfast options before 12pm, which is perfect for when you want a productive morning.

My Go-To Order: Spicy Feta Bowl or Piri Piri Chicken!

Vira Vira Meze Bar

Mediterranean food done right. This is one of those spots you stumble upon once and then keep going back to.

The gyros here are easily some of the best I’ve had, and it’s perfect for a quick, filling meal when you don’t want to sit down for too long. They also give you free hot pita and dip with your order :)

My Go-To Order : Chicken Lavash

Divorare

A very popular European sandwich spot, and for good reason.

The sandwiches are huge, flavorful, and feel a little more elevated than your typical grab-and-go lunch. It’s one of my favorite places when I want something quick but still really satisfying.

My Go-To Order : Campagnola

Takos Al Pastor/TKO Tacos

Because I couldn’t make a Madrid cheap eats list without the €1 tacos…

Both of these spots are student staples: super cheap, super fast, and always busy (which is how you know they’re good). They’re the perfect kind of place to go with friends and order a lot of food, but beware the line outside of Takos Al Pastor if you’re in a rush.

My Go-To-Order : Chicken Tinga Tacos and Veggie Quesadilla

Pecorilo

A pasta spot near campus that has HUGE portions. Easily two meals if you want to save some for dinner too.

It’s my go-to spot when I’m craving some Italian.

My Go-To-Order : Cacio e Pepe or Arrabiata

Tierra Burrito Bar

One of the things I miss most in Madrid is Chipotle, but Tierra is the perfect Chipotle dupe for when I’m craving it.

You can fully customize your bowl or burrito, and it’s a great meal for when you’re in the mood for something filling and familiar.

My Go-To Order: Veggie Burrito (& it comes with free guac!)

NAP

A cozy Neapolitan pizza place that feels like the perfect dinner spot to go to with friends.

The pizzas are light, fresh, and simple, and the vibe inside makes it a great place to sit down and relax for a bit.

My Go-To Order : Margarita Pizza

Skyrland

This place has a super unique concept! It’s basically an açaí bowl, but mixed with Icelandic skyr yogurt, which makes it super high in protein.

You can choose from a bunch of different smoothie bases, yogurt bases, and toppings, and they have a bunch of premade bowls as well!

My Go-To-Order: It changes every time :)

Other Tips

  • Take Advantage of the Menú del Día: This is one of the best deals in Madrid. For around €15, you usually get a starter, main, dessert, and a drink. It’s the perfect way to have a full sit-down lunch at many restaurants without overspending.

  • Go Grocery Shopping: Places like Mercadona and Lidl are lifesavers. You can find cheap groceries, ready-made meals, and snacks for the week for great prices. It’s one of the easiest ways to balance eating out with eating at home.

  • Don’t Be Afraid of Random Spots: Some of my best meals in Madrid have come from places I just walked by on the street. If a place looks busy with locals, has a simple menu, and smells amazing, stop by and try it out!

Madrid has honestly changed the way I think about food. It’s not just about eating–it’s about slowing down, trying new things, and finding your own go-to spots along the way. And the best part? You really don’t need to spend a lot while you’re at it :)

¡Buen Provecho!
