Tips to Immerse Yourself in Real Madrid Life

When studying abroad, sometimes it’s easy to forget that the city that you live in is actually a city worth exploring as well. However, after the first weekend of doing all the main touristy activities (aka seeing the local palace, cathedral, etc.), it gets kind of confusing what to do. 

Here are some tips to avoid that feeling so you can continue on exploring the city throughout your weeks abroad!

1. Look for local festivals happening in your area/processions that you can attend

In many European cities, there are always festivals occurring throughout the year to celebrate local cultures/religions. Taking part/witnessing these processions is a great way to immerse yourself in your city’s culture and have unique experiences to speak about when you get back!

For example, during the spring semester, Madrid has many local festivals such as:

• Processions during La Semana Santa

• Carnaval

• Dos de Mayo

2. Explore Weekly Local Events (flea markets, farmers’ markets, etc.)

Similar to NYC, most study abroad sites will have their local events that happen weekly. Going to these events and browsing what’s available is a great way to buy yourself some great souvenirs or get some ingredients for your dinner that night! 

For example, Madrid has El Rastro every Sunday!

3. Engage in Local Art and Activities!

Most study abroad sites have either a theatre or some sort of activity involving an audience/stadium that is worth attending! Attending these types of events (even if you don’t understand the language) is a great way to see the differences between American pastimes and the pastimes of your study abroad site. 

In Madrid, this could mean visiting a flamenco show or going to a show in el Teatro Real.

4. Choose an Activity of Your Choice and Find Different Areas to Do It In!

Another great way to explore your city is to choose an activity and go explore a new area every time you engage in it. This could mean going to a coffee shop in different parts of the city, going to read in different parks around you, or even just walking around!

By forcing yourself to go to a new neighborhood/location, it allows you to see new things while still doing the same familiar things you love.
